Skammdegi (Dark Winter), was an artist residency, located in Olafsfjordor, North Iceland from early December 2016 until early February 2017. Olafsfjordor is a small village of 800 people located 19 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The residency is intentionally planned to maximize the experience of a long, dark winter approaching the Winter Solstice and coming out the other side. Basalt cliffs surround the town preventing the sun from appearing. At the Solstice the sun rises at noon and sets at 2:30 pm.
